Glossary
Accord - A housing association based in Birmingham. They are a preferred partner of the Housing Corporation. Don't think they have links in Cambridge (Hamish)
BCHS - Birmingham Co-operative Housing Society - a partner of Accord who have experience developing new co-ops and expanding existing co-ops using Housing Corporation money.
CAR - Cambridge Architectural Research. Are doing plan for environmental improvements. Andy Brown is part of CAR.
CDS - Co-operative Development Society. London based secondary Co-op. Developing a Mutual Home Ownership scheme currently.
CHS - Cambridge Housing Society - a local Housing Association who are a preferred partner of the local authorities. They have expressed interest in working with us.
Community Land Trust - A trust that holds land for a community. Can be used for holding land that will be built on. Being used by CDS with their Mutual Home Ownership scheme.
Housing Association - are independent not-for-profit bodies that provide low cost "social housing" for people in housing need. Any trading surplus is used to maintain existing homes and to help finance new ones.
Housing Corporation is the Non-departmental public body that funds and regulates housing associations in England.
Fully Mutual; a term used to describe Housing Co-ops (like Argyle St) membership is a condition of tenancy and only tenants may be members; hence ensuring democratic control by the tenants.
Mutual Home Ownership scheme - A scheme where all members own a portion of the equity of the entire housing development. The land might be owned by a Community Land Trust.
Primary Housing Co-op - a Co-op where people are actually living and running the site - like us in fact!
Preferred Partner - local and housing corporation (can someone else fill this in)
RSL - Registered Social Landlord is the technical name for social landlords that are registered with the Housing Corporation - most are housing associations, but there are also trusts, co-operatives and companies.
Secondary (Housing) Co-op - an organisation that provides services to a Primary Housing Co-op. these may be things like management services (e.g. accounting) and/or new development. Some secondary co-ops, such as BCHS, have links to larger organisations that enable them to access Housing Corporation funds
Shared Ownership scheme - a scheme where you own part of your home, and rent the rest. It is meant to be a first foot on the housing ladder.
SPEAR - Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine. A way of working out how to balance priorities of a community with respect to sustainability. Developed by ARUP.
